Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger
State on Tuesday said Hajiya Belkisu
Mahmoud, the woman who
slumped in Government House on
Monday died of a heart problem
after suffering a bout of severe
coughing.
Narrating how the incident
happened in Government House,
Minna, Gov. Aliyu said the woman
died half an hour after being rushed
to the hospital.
“The woman came into my office
panting. I thought it was because of
the stairs she climbed but she told
me that she was sick and had a
heart problem.
“She came to lay some complaints
on some issues in the state; and as
she was speaking, she started
coughing. When the coughing did
not stop, I sent for an ambulance
which took her to the hospital.
“I want to state here that I was in
the office till late in the evening
waiting to hear report about her
health, and I was shocked to hear
she died”, the governor narrated.
He added that to honour the
memory of the deceased, he would
look into the issues she had
complained about and order an
investigation into the matter.
Aliyu said, “The issues she came to
discuss was spread across the state
urban development board, NSEMA,
water board and revenue
collection”.
The governor expressed his
condolence to the family of the
deceased and urged the Head of
Service to ensure all her
entitlements were paid to the
family in due time.
Giving an insight to what led to the
late Mahmoud’s death, the medical
doctor in charge of the Government
House clinic, Dr. Abdulmalik Ara
said she had cardiac asthma, adding
that her lung was filled with fluids,
which hindered the penetration of
the oxygen that was administered
to her.
