The SUV packed with explosives exploded near a beauty salon in a bustling busy market at rush hour in the Sadr City district. Most of the victims were women and many of the wounded are in critical condition, according to reports released by Iraqi forces to the Associated Press.
ISIS, which considers Shias as apostates (non-believers), have claimed responsibility for the attack claiming they targeted Shia members.
The fight against ISIS has worsened a long-running sectarian conflict in Iraq, mostly between the Shia majority and Sunni minority.
'The car bomb was a pickup truck loaded with fruit and vegetables.' Eye- witness Karim Salih, 45, told the Associated Press.
'Its driver parked the vehicle and quickly disappeared among the crowd....It was such a thunderous explosion that jolted the ground,The force of the explosion threw me for meters and I lost conscious for a few minutes," he added.More photos
